INTERVIEW WITH DJ ROXY

LBM: Tell us a little about yourself.

DJ ROXY: My full names are Chanda Kangwa. I am 24 yrs old. I’ve been on radio for 3 yrs. I studied journalism and public relations. I have a certificate from ZAMCOM. I did my internship at MUVI TV where I got some experience in production. I later joined HOT FM and I worked there for 2 yrs. Now I’m with radio phoenix and I’ve been there for  a yr plus.

LBM: What music do you play?

DJ ROXY: Almost everything as long as it is good music but mostly I’m in love with Zambian music

LBM: Why DJaying?

DJ ROXY: You know, I didn’t want to be a DJ. I studied journalism because I wanted to be a singer. I figured if I studied journalism I would easily meet the right people. In looking for a job I figured I would do anything journalism orientated but I really didn’t want to be a DJ because my father was a DJ (DJ Space Kid friom way back in the 80s), so I wanted my own identity.

LBM: If not DJaying what would you have done?

DJ ROXY: I wanted TV mostly. It would have been either music or TV.

LBM: How is the singing thing going?

DJ ROXY: When I started the music thing, from being a singer I was turned into a rapper. So I kinda dropped it because I’m still trying to figure out whether its rap or singing that I should do.

LBM: How far did you go with it? Any singles/album out?

DJ ROXY: I have singles but they are not really played.

LBM: Who is your favourite radio personality?

DJ ROXY: Not that I’m the best but I’m in love with my self (laughs). But some of the people that inspire me are Chi, Kaliwa and 3ill.

LBM: What is your advice to young people who would like to venture into your type of job?

DJ ROXY: This industry is hard. It is fun but hard. Because there is not much support from government to the media industry as regards financing. So it has to be something you are willing to sacrifice a lot for. Also, once one becomes a DJ they should learn to differentiate between who they are on radioand who they are in real life. Keep it real.

LBM: Finally, tell us about ‘The Hangout’.

DJ ROXY: ‘The Hangout’ is my baby. It is a monthly open mic session for poetry, comedy and song. My radio show on Friday is actually called The Hangout. On it I bring local celebrities and we do a short bio. We basically celebrate the local Zambian who is doing well in the arts. Mostly on radio we hear the popular songs. We don’t pay much attention to poetry and comedy. So at the open mic session we include the up and coming artists as well. We want to bring together all sorts of artists and blend them together to give a different feel of entertainment.

We had our second session on 3rd August 2013. We had the likes of FJay, Chisamo, K.R.Y.T.I.C and Yvy-apple winter. We are having our next one on 7th September 2013 at the Krome (Polo Grill) and we have lots in store for our audience. The charge is K20 per person. Hope to see you there.

LBM: There you have it ladies and gentlemen. Catch DJ Roxy on radio phoenix 89.5 FM every Monday 1200 to 1500 hours, Wednesdays 1500 to 1800 hours and on Fridays from 2100 to 0100 hours.  You can also follow DJ Roxy on twitter @roxyjonesk and the facebook fan page: DJ Roxy “mizz jones”.

SEYA: THE STORY BEHIND THE SWEET VOICE

Most people know her as the golden voice behind Pompi’s MIZU album. Most especially for her part on the Mulungu Samagona song which makes hearts melt and eyes fill with tears. However, behind the sweet voice is a story filled with pain, struggle and triumph through God’s grace. We caught up with the beautiful Seya to hear her story.

Born Seya Fundafunda, in 1983 in the city of Lusaka. Second born in a family of three flanked by an older brother and a younger sister. At the age of 14 she moved to Geneva Switzerland to stay with her aunty after her mother passed on. She did her high school at International School of Geneva. She later moved to the US where she did a short training in theatre production. After being away for 9 yrs, she came back to Zambia in 2007.

For young Seya, growing up was not as straight as one would expect of a Christian child. “I got born again when I was 11 years old, but didn’t stay on the right path, I went through a lot. I had to go through a lot of detours but I am glad I did. I lost my mom who was my best friend at a tender age, to me that made me sort of broken. I went astray. I prayed but I felt empty.”
It took Seya a while to get back on track. She did some stupid rebellious teen/young adult stuff from partying to drinking. A self confessed former party girl turned Jesus freak. Seya hated herself.

“I was so consumed by guilt about what I was doing. But God’s unfailing love is so amazing. Had a lot of self worth issues like any other girl out there. Daddy issues. You name it.”

But deep down Seya knew that God was with her. She got tired of all the parties and drinking. The turning point in her life came in 2011. She asked God to forgive her, she rededicated her life to Him and she has never been the same.

“I had this guilt and shame that haunted me for a while. I kept thinking of what my party friends would think of me and what my church friends would think of me but in the end it did not matter. What mattered was what God saw in me and what He thought of me.”

What an awesome story. You are living proof of God’s amazing grace. Now on to the music end of things.

Q: At what age did you start singing?
A: I started singing at like 10 I think, but joined a youth choir at my former church, Grace Ministries.

Q: Are you from a family of musicians/vocalists?
A: My two uncles played and sang in a band. And my aunties sing. My family is quite the artistic family.

Q: We know that you are Pompi's backing vocalist. Are you working on an album?
A: I haven’t started yet, but the song writers are doing their thing. I want to take my time. I don’t want to rush anything. Will most likely have a record out sometime next year. Be patient with me people! no pressure (laughs).

Q: You stole our hearts on Mulungu Samagona and we want more of you. So what direction will your album take?
A: I am going to let the holy spirit guide every person who is going to be involved in it because it will not be my album, but God’s album. I am just a willing and obedient vessel.

Q: What is your passion?
A: I am passionate about the truth. Getting the truth out there. Helping people see God’s truth and his love

Q: What impact would you like your music to have on people?
A: Healing. For broken people to come to the healing power of God. The same healing I have gotten for my past brokenness.

Q:  How can people reach you for features and/or appearances? Are you signed? Do you have a manager?
A: I am not yet signed and I don’t have a manager. I am very easy to reach and work with. Find me on twitter (@seyaFK) and on facebook (Seya Ruth Fundafunda). I have a criteria for doing features though. I look at the message of the song. Is it sound doctrine. And then what the feel of the song is.

INTRODUCING: CHISAMO

The City of Lusaka is a hive of activity and in the music industry every day there is a new song, a new artist, a new sound. It is this scenario that makes it difficult for a new artist to be heard and noticed. For one to catch the attention of the masses they would have to be something special…

And that is exactly what Chisamo is – special. When you listen to her first two singles “Nizaku lila bwanji” and “Thandiwe” one can feel the heart and soul that goes into her singing, the passion.

Chisamo’s ability to tell a story with emotion is what saw “Nizaku lila bwanji” climb all the way to number 3 on Hot FM’s top 10 charts. Chisamo is definitely making waves on the music scene. We look forward to hearing more from this talented song bird.

You can find Chisamo on facebook and on twitter @Chisamosings. Feel free to download her singles from the following links: Niza Ku Lila Bwanji:
