SEYA: THE STORY BEHIND THE SWEET VOICE

Most people know her as the golden voice behind Pompi’s MIZU album. Most especially for her part on the Mulungu Samagona song which makes hearts melt and eyes fill with tears. However, behind the sweet voice is a story filled with pain, struggle and triumph through God’s grace. We caught up with the beautiful Seya to hear her story.

Born Seya Fundafunda, in 1983 in the city of Lusaka. Second born in a family of three flanked by an older brother and a younger sister. At the age of 14 she moved to Geneva Switzerland to stay with her aunty after her mother passed on. She did her high school at International School of Geneva. She later moved to the US where she did a short training in theatre production. After being away for 9 yrs, she came back to Zambia in 2007.

For young Seya, growing up was not as straight as one would expect of a Christian child. “I got born again when I was 11 years old, but didn’t stay on the right path, I went through a lot. I had to go through a lot of detours but I am glad I did. I lost my mom who was my best friend at a tender age, to me that made me sort of broken. I went astray. I prayed but I felt empty.”
It took Seya a while to get back on track. She did some stupid rebellious teen/young adult stuff from partying to drinking. A self confessed former party girl turned Jesus freak. Seya hated herself.

“I was so consumed by guilt about what I was doing. But God’s unfailing love is so amazing. Had a lot of self worth issues like any other girl out there. Daddy issues. You name it.”

But deep down Seya knew that God was with her. She got tired of all the parties and drinking. The turning point in her life came in 2011. She asked God to forgive her, she rededicated her life to Him and she has never been the same.

“I had this guilt and shame that haunted me for a while. I kept thinking of what my party friends would think of me and what my church friends would think of me but in the end it did not matter. What mattered was what God saw in me and what He thought of me.”

What an awesome story. You are living proof of God’s amazing grace. Now on to the music end of things.

Q: At what age did you start singing?
A: I started singing at like 10 I think, but joined a youth choir at my former church, Grace Ministries.

Q: Are you from a family of musicians/vocalists?
A: My two uncles played and sang in a band. And my aunties sing. My family is quite the artistic family.

Q: We know that you are Pompi's backing vocalist. Are you working on an album?
A: I haven’t started yet, but the song writers are doing their thing. I want to take my time. I don’t want to rush anything. Will most likely have a record out sometime next year. Be patient with me people! no pressure (laughs).

Q: You stole our hearts on Mulungu Samagona and we want more of you. So what direction will your album take?
A: I am going to let the holy spirit guide every person who is going to be involved in it because it will not be my album, but God’s album. I am just a willing and obedient vessel.

Q: What is your passion?
A: I am passionate about the truth. Getting the truth out there. Helping people see God’s truth and his love

Q: What impact would you like your music to have on people?
A: Healing. For broken people to come to the healing power of God. The same healing I have gotten for my past brokenness.

Q:  How can people reach you for features and/or appearances? Are you signed? Do you have a manager?
A: I am not yet signed and I don’t have a manager. I am very easy to reach and work with. Find me on twitter (@seyaFK) and on facebook (Seya Ruth Fundafunda). I have a criteria for doing features though. I look at the message of the song. Is it sound doctrine. And then what the feel of the song is.
